The Difference

There’s a moment, right after a long day, when a view like this catches me and everything gets quiet for a second.

No emails. No deadlines. No one asking me to log an interaction or hit a number. Just sky, or trees, or whatever is stretched out in front of me, existing without asking permission from anybody’s calendar.

And it hits me every time. None of this was ever the plan for us. Nobody was born to sit in traffic checking their phone, or panic over a quarterly goal, or chase a version of security that keeps moving every time we get close to it. We built that. We agreed to it. Somewhere along the way we signed up to be the hamster on the wheel and started calling the wheel “normal.”

Nature doesn’t do that. It doesn’t care what’s due Friday. It just is, patient and enormous and completely unbothered by whatever is stressing you out right now. And for one second, standing in front of something that old and that indifferent, all of it, the bills, the calls, the noise, shrinks down to the size it actually is. Small.

I think that’s the real gift. Not escape. Perspective.

We didn’t sign up to disappear into the wheel forever. We signed up to run it for a while. Don’t forget the difference.
